Tonight, Friday, February 15th marks my professional curatorial debut with the opening of Copy.right? The Art of Appropriation at 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago.
It is also the opening of Motion to Stillness, a small invitational group show that includes two of my pieces (Incubator and Augamy) at Zhou B. Art Gallery.
Coincidentally, both shows are in the same building. So come out and see both shows!

Work in Progress @ -2F
When temperatures top -2F in Chicago, it's almost impossible for me to work outside. Sure, I can get a few people to stand barefoot in a strapless gown on a frozen stream - but is it nice to do that to someone?! Not really. And my fingers get cold when adjusting shutter and f/stops.
So when it's too cold to work outside, I take my work inside.
Indoor shoots are sometimes a challenge for me - a welcome challenge though. I find my indoor locations the same way I find my outdoor locations - I see them and assess them. I am constantly asking myself questions when visiting friends homes or attending events. Is there something I can use here? Would the owner be willing to allow me to use it? Can I get a model to pose here? How does this space work with my themes? Do I need props? Etc...
I love to photograph in natural light as well as with lighting equipment. Sometimes I photograph in the same location at different times of day utilizing both natural light and artificial light.
Below are a few images that I've been working on. I've shot a few sets in this location. I feel the space lends itself nicely to my themes.
The first 3 images were created using artificial lighting in the evening.
I must really take a moment to thank my models - most of which are friends of mine that spend their days off doing things for me that they normally wouldn't do without a few drinks. My friends and models, I tip my hat to you!

February 15 to March 9, 2013
ABOUT
As long as there have been artists, there have been artists who
appropriate. To appropriate is to borrow elements in the creation of new
work. Appropriation recontextualises whatever it borrows to create
something new. In some cases the original 'thing' remains accessible as
the original, without change, but in other cases, the new work takes on a
completely different façade and ultimately new meaning. Thus, blurring
the line of what is fair usage and challenging the implications of
copyright laws. The practice of appropriation can be traced back before
the Renaissance, but became popular with the Surrealists, Dadaists, Pop
Artists and the Neo-Geo Artists when mass production became a cultural
norm.Art is not created in a bubble. Artists are influenced by almost everything: the internet, television, literature, history, news and even other artists. The “copy.right?” exhibition seeks to give forum to contemporary artists who explore the idea of appropriation through concept, materials, awareness and who also challenge global mass culture.
copy.right? is juried and curated by Sergio Gomez (33 Contemporary Gallery director) and Jennifer Moore (photographer).

Great Start to 2013!
What a wonderful start to 2013!
New Work
I am working on a new series specifically for the show, Motion to Stillness, curated by Sergio Gomez and Didi Menéndez in February 2013. The show will be presented at the Zhou B Art Center and published by PoetsArtists Magazine. February 15 - March 10, 2013.
New Shows
I have a few shows already in the works for 2013. Visit my site to see the most up-to-date list.
Curating
I have been invited me to curate the show, Copy.right? at 33 Contemporary Gallery in February. I am looking forward to co-curating with one of my favorite artists and friends, Sergio Gomez!
Workshops
In April 2013 I will be hosting a workshop at Dona Ana College in New Mexico. I have designed the workshop to help participants tap into their own personal experiences to create a more defined dramatic narrative in their photography. I'm looking forward to teaching on this new platform.
Old and New Friendships
In 2012 I forged some wonderful professional relationships that I am eager to watch grow. Among them, I am grateful to Megan Paonessa of Flying House, Steven Lockwood of Water Street Studios, Paul Shranz of Dona Ana College and Sergio Gomez of 33 Contemporary Gallery. I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences I have gained in 2012.
I am looking forward to a creative and productive new year!
